Understand the Safety Basics Before You Start

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is non-invasive and most clients find sessions calm and comfortable. During treatment, you relax inside a pressurized chamber while breathing concentrated oxygen for about 60–90 minutes.

Because pressure changes are involved, the most common side effect is temporary ear pressure, similar to what you may feel while flying or driving through elevation changes. We explain what to expect before your session and review basic safety considerations so you feel prepared.

What to Know About Hyperbaric Therapy Safety

Hyperbaric therapy is considered safe for many people, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. These are the main areas we review before a first session.

1

Review Your Health History

Before starting, we ask about your goals, current health, medications, recent surgeries, and any conditions that may affect whether hyperbaric therapy is appropriate.

2

Understand Pressure Changes

As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel pressure in your ears. This is common and usually feels similar to flying or changing elevation.

3

Start With the Right Plan

Most clients complete a series of sessions based on their goals, comfort level, and how their body responds over time.

1. Common Side Effects
The most common side effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is temporary ear pressure or mild ear discomfort caused by the change in pressure. This usually resolves quickly as pressure releases at the end of the session.

Some people may also feel tired after a session as the body adjusts. If anything feels uncomfortable during treatment, we can help you adjust and talk through what you are experiencing.
2. Who Should Talk With a Doctor First?
If you have an active medical condition, recent surgery, lung concerns, ear or sinus issues, untreated pneumothorax, seizure history, or are currently receiving medical treatment, you should speak with your healthcare provider before starting hyperbaric therapy.

Hyperbaric therapy should not replace care from your doctor or specialist.
3. Is Hyperbaric Therapy Safe for Children?
Hyperbaric therapy may be used with children in certain situations, but a parent or guardian should speak with a healthcare provider first. Safety depends on the child’s health history, goals, comfort level, and ability to tolerate pressure changes.
4. What Should I Avoid Before a Session?
Wear clean, loose cotton clothing. Avoid cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, wigs, jewelry, alcohol, and carbonated drinks before treatment. If you smoke or use tobacco, it is best to avoid it during your treatment period because it can interfere with oxygen transport.
